fifth street residence

This an alley flat and garage for a Bouldin residence. The client wanted Neutra on a shoestring, while combining a 360° upstairs view with a one-bedroom, two-bathroom, full house program in 850 sf. The structural solution is acheived by a continuous LVL ring in the upstairs wall, immediately above the strip windows, which allows the shallow ceiling. Steel columns and cross-bracing (fabricated in a single day) solve for the lack of bracing. An irregular system of floor trusses allows the stair to turn around the upstairs bathroom, and an exterior mechanical chase allows risers to sidestep the structure.
